Best Sustainably Produced Wines of Washington
Sustainably made wines are sweeping the market, and many wineries are turning to these practices to limit their impact on the environment.
Biodynamic farming is one of the oldest farming methods that focuses on the land’s natural resources, cultivating high quality fruit and eliminating the use of herbicides, chemicals, pesticides, synthetic fertilizers, or fungicides. Preparations made from fermented manure, minerals and herbs are used to restore and harmonize the vital life forces of the vineyard, enhancing the nutrition, quality and flavor of the grapes.
Organic farming and winemaking guides organizations away from pesticides and herbicides, and towards practices that use natural oils or minerals to control pests in the vineyard. In the winery, any products used have to be certified organic.
Sustainable farming practices are some of the newest principles applied to the vineyard and winery. These practices encompass the whole farm including preserving riparian areas to support native flora and fauna. LIVE and Salmon Safe are the certification programs that govern these practices and support vineyards and wineries that want to apply them.
These Washington wineries adhere to biodynamic, organic, and/or sustainable farming principles because they see it as contributing to healthy vineyards, high-quality fruit and enjoyable wines. Visit these Washington wineries to learn more and taste the resulting wines for yourself!
